Registration

For healthcare professionals wanting to work in Australia you need to gain Australian registration in your field of practice prior to seeking work.

Nurses

In order to work in Australia your priority should be to obtain Australian Nursing Registration. To do this you need a registration pack. Each State in Australia has a Nurses Regulatory Authority and you will be required to register in the State you will be working in. For more information go to www.anmc.org.au

Doctors

All overseas doctors who wish to work in Australia must obtain registration the relevant State. Each State and Territory operates a Medical Board and it is essential to be registered with the appropriate board to work in Australia. The Australian Medical Council (AMC) website has contact details for each Australian Medical Board. For more information go to www.amc.org.au

Midwives

In order to work in Australia your highest priority should be to obtain Australian Midwifery Registration. To do this you need a registration pack. Each State in Australia has a Midwives Regulatory Authority and you will be required to register in the State you will be working in. For more information go to www.anmc.org.au 

Occupational Therapists

Occupational therapists must be registered to practise in Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Registration is through the local registration boards. Registration is not required in Tasmania, New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria or the Australian Capital Territory. However, some employers will require membership of OT Australia (the professional association for occupational therapists in Australia). In order to apply for registration with a local registration board, or for membership with OT Australia, it will be necessary for COTRB to assess your overseas OT qualifications. Pharmacists

The Australian Pharmacy Council Inc is the national body for Australian State and Territory authorities responsible for the registration of pharmacists. The Pharmacy Council of New Zealand is an associate member. For more information go to www.psa.org.au

Physiotherapists

You must register with the appropriate Physiotherapists Registration Board before practising as a physiotherapist in Australia. For more information go to www.physiocouncil.com.au

Psychologists

To work as a psychologist in Australia you are legally required to be registered. Registration is the province of the State and Territory Psychologists Registration Boards. Radiographers

Registration or Licensing of Diagnostic Radiographers/Medical Imaging Technologists and Radiation Therapists is a State issue and therefore varies from State or Territory. For more information go to www.air.asn.au

Speech Therapists

Dentists

Audiologists

Visa & Immigration Information

There is currently a shortage of doctors and nurses in Australia, particularly in regional areas. General practitioners or specialists can apply for a visa to work in Australia if they have obtained their primary medical qualification in a country other than Australia or gained their medical qualifications in Australia and are not an Australian permanent resident.
